Imagica EMS Leads VFX Production for Netflix Global Hit Series “Last Samurai Standing”

Imagica Entertainment Media Services, Inc. (Imagica EMS) served as the lead VFX vendor for the Netflix series “Last Samurai Standing”, which is currently streaming exclusively worldwide on Netflix.
The series has achieved historic success for Japanese content, reaching No. 1 on the Netflix Weekly Global Top 10 for Non-English Series in its second week of release. Following this global acclaim, a second season has already been officially announced.
As the lead VFX vendor, Imagica EMS was involved from the earliest planning stages. Our team accompanied the entire filming schedule and managed the data and quality control for approximately 2,000 VFX shots. Imagica EMS spearheaded the production of key visual sequences, including the "Kodoku Battle at Tenryu-ji Temple" and the extensive CG environments and compositing of the post towns featured throughout the episodes.
Our VFX division is rooted in TOYO LINKS, a pioneer of Japan’s CG and VFX industry. This legacy of expertise in feature films, television dramas, and game production is carried forward across our studios in Tokyo and Osaka. In particular, the Osaka team leverages decades of experience in "Jidaigeki" (period dramas) filmed in Kyoto. For “Last Samurai Standing” our team seamlessly integrated sophisticated VFX with the raw, high-intensity action sequences prioritized by producer, lead actor and action choreographer Junichi Okada, creating an unprecedented and immersive entertainment experience.

Netflix Series: Last Samurai Standing
Based on the novel of the same name by Shogo Imamura—a Naoki Prize-winning author whose work is hailed as the "greatest entertainment period novel"—this epic production is set in the Meiji era following the end of the samurai age. The series stars Junichi Okada, who also serves as producer and action planner, and is directed by Michihito Fujii. In addition to reaching No. 1 on the Netflix Weekly Global Top 10 for Non-English Series, it has dominated charts in 11 countries, including Japan, and entered the Top 10 in 86 countries and regions, recording an extraordinary global hit.
