Imagica EMS Creates Audio Description for “Grave of the Fireflies” on Netflix
Imagica Entertainment Media Services, Inc. has produced the audio description for Studio Ghibli's film “Grave of the Fireflies” which began streaming on Netflix starting Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
Audio Description (also known as an audio guide) offers narrated descriptions of key visual elements-such as character movements, expressions, costumes, and scene changes-that may not be understood from dialogue alone. Imagica EMS has an extensive track record in producing audio descriptions for a wide range of content, including feature films, television series, and anime.
In collaboration with Netflix, Imagica EMS produced the audio description for “Grave of the Fireflies” to create an immersive "auditory viewing experience" that all viewers, including those with visual impairments, can enjoy. The Japanese version features narration by Shota Yasuda of SUPER EIGHT, while the English version is narrated by Patrick Harlan, a comedian with deep multicultural understanding.

About the Film “Grave of the Fireflies”
An animated Studio Ghibli film released in 1988, directed by Isao Takahata and based on the Naoki Prize-winning short story by Akiyuki Nosaka. It depicts the tragedy of war and the bonds of family. The film has been exclusively streaming on Netflix in over 190 countries and regions outside Japan since September of last year. Its Japanese debut on Netflix on July 15, 2025, includes the simultaneous release of both Japanese and English audio-described versions.
